How to preserve gourds & pumpkins this fall.

Fall has arrived. It’s time to purchase gourds and pumpkins to decorate your home with.

Want to make sure they last all season?  We have a great idea for you to try!

Use this cleaning method to make sure your pumpkins and gourds last all season.

Ingredients:

  • 1 gallon hot water
  • 2 tablespoons bleach
  • 1 squirt of dish soap

Directions:  Soak gourds/pumpkins for 30 minutes.  After the soak, rinse and let air dry. Make sure to soak pumpkins before carving.

That’s it!  Use this method for your gourds, decorative pumpkins and carving pumpkins.

A few other tips for you:

  • Keep your pumpkins and gourds away from sunlight if possible.
  • Avoid setting them directly on the pavement.  Try to set them on cardboard, hay or wood.  I have even seen them placed in hanging baskets!

Alright, let the decorating begin!

Here is where you can find all of the fall decor:

  • Market at the Farm:  Monday – Friday, 8am – 6pm & Saturday, 8am –  5pm.  Address is 5888 120th Ave, Holland, MI 49424.
  • Muskegon Farmers Market:  Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, 8am – 2pm.

We are also at the Kalamazoo Farmers Market on Saturday’s, 7am – 2pm with all the veggies and gourds, but no pumpkins.

Enjoy the season!

Have you ever dug your own carrots before?

There is something so peaceful about walking around the field, choosing a spot to pick your own beans. The great accomplishment you get when you finally get that carrot dug out from the ground.

Life is so busy, we hope that you can come out to the farm and enjoy some moments of peace.

This week at the farm we are offering U-Pick Carrots & Beans!

U-pick beans are $1.50/lb.

U-pick carrots are $1.00/lb.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Check in at the market at the farm when you arrive.  Bring in the container you plan to pick into for Kathy to weigh and she will give you directions of where to go.
  2. Head out to the field.  Watch for the signs of where to park and where you can find the carrot and bean field.
  3. Carrots grow under the ground so you will need to dig them out.  Have fun digging them out and see what you find!  Beans grown on the plants.  Move the plants around to find your beans.  Green & Yellow beans are available for picking. Have Fun!
  4. Once you are done head back up to the farm to pay.

The farm’s address is 5888 120th Ave, Holland.

The market is open Monday – Friday, 8am – 6pm & Saturday, 8am – 5pm.

Any questions about the u-pick please let us know.  Thank you!
