Asparagus season is short. Like, blink-and-you-miss-it short. If you’ve ever found yourself in the middle of winter wishing you had just one more pound of fresh asparagus, this post is for you.

The good news? Freezing asparagus is easier than you think, and when you do it right, it holds up beautifully. Here’s exactly how we’d do it.

What You’ll Need

Fresh asparagus

A large pot of boiling water

A big bowl of ice water

A colander

Freezer bags or vacuum seal bags

A sharpie for labeling (don’t skip this — January you will thank you)

Step 1: Wash and Trim

Give your asparagus a good rinse under cold water. Then snap or cut off the woody ends — you’ll know where to cut because the stalk will naturally snap at the right spot.

Step 2: Blanch It

This is the step people skip, and it’s the reason their frozen asparagus turns to mush. Don’t skip it.

Blanching stops the enzymes that break down flavor and texture over time. Drop your asparagus into a pot of boiling water for 2–3 minutes depending on thickness. Thin stalks are closer to 2 minutes, thick stalks closer to 3.

Step 3: Ice Bath — Fast

The second your timer goes off, pull the asparagus out and plunge it straight into ice water. This stops the cooking immediately and keeps that bright green color intact. Leave it in the ice bath for the same amount of time you blanched it.

Step 4: Dry It Well

Spread your asparagus out on a clean towel and pat it dry. Extra moisture means ice crystals, and ice crystals mean soggy asparagus. Take a few extra minutes here — it’s worth it.

Step 5: Pack and Freeze

Lay your dried asparagus in a single layer on a baking sheet and pop it in the freezer for an hour or two. This “flash freeze” keeps the spears from clumping together into one giant asparagus brick. Once frozen, transfer to your freezer bags, squeeze out as much air as possible, label with the date, and you’re done.

Properly frozen asparagus will keep well for 8–12 months.

How to Use It Later

No need to thaw — just toss it straight from the freezer into soups, stir fries, egg dishes, or roast it in the oven. It won’t be identical to fresh, but it’ll be so much better than anything from the grocery store freezer aisle.

We’re excited to share our Market Club Bonus Days special! As we prepare for the upcoming growing season, this is a great way to support the farm early — and get a little extra value for yourself too.

Here’s the deal: When you purchase a Market Club card with cash or check before March 3, we’ll add 8% extra to your card.

Market Club cards can be used at our farm store and farmers markets on fresh produce, meats, eggs, honey, maple syrup, and more.

Cards come in $200, $400 or $600 increments – then the 8% will be added. For example: purchase the $400 option and get a card with $432 to spend.

They never expire, so you can use them whenever it’s convenient. Members also receive occasional emails with farm updates, seasonal highlights, and recipes.

Purchasing a card now helps us gear up for the busy summer season — seeds, supplies, and all the behind-the-scenes work that makes fresh local food possible.

Who the Market Club Card is for:

• People who love our farm and want to support local farmers.

• If you want to support our farm financially before the main season starts.

• If you plan to shop from us regularly during the season, but don’t want the weekly subscription commitment.

If you’ve been thinking about joining (or reloading your card), this is the perfect time.

Get the form HERE and mail the form and check to 12251 Tyler Street, Holland, MI 49424 or you can give it to us in person at a market.

How about that sunshine yesterday! This time of year sunny days are hard to come by and we enjoyed every minute of it! I took some time walking around the greenhouses, pictures just look better with some sun. I am going to share them with you today!

What is growing in the greenhouse right now? Alot of greens! Lettuce, Salad Mix, Chard, Kale & Spinach.

We don’t have enough light this time of year to support any crops that have blossoms. While we did do a tomato trial, it did not work great. The days are just not long enough.

Crops are more or less “hanging out” right now. We do harvest, but crops grow very, very slow. Sunny days like yesterday make a world of difference.

Once we hit late February/early March it’s like a switch flips. The day length is long enough, and we get enough sun that the plants just explode!

We are getting the greenhouse ready for tomatoes! Everything gets cleaned and then the troughs are filled with new dirt. The first group of tomatoes are looking great! They will be ready for their new home soon. Getting the greenhouse ready for them is on top of the to-do list!

Thanks for coming along on my greenhouse walk! We look forward to seeing you at the markets this week. We will have lots of greens waiting for you!

• I’m someone who loves people well.
That might mean doing one thoughtful thing for someone else each week — a call, a note, a small favor — because love isn’t just a feeling, it’s an action.

• I’m someone who follows through.
Not just starting things, but finishing the ones that matter. Who we become is shaped by the small choices we make day after day.

One thing I know about our customers is that you care about supporting local food and the people who grow it. You pick up seasonal produce, shop at farmers markets, and invest in relationships as much as ingredients.

Where’s this farmers least favorite place to be? Behind a desk.

Mitch has been working on seed orders and that has required some desk time.

Lots of questions and things to decide on!

Time is spent looking at last year’s orders and what seeds we have left. What changes do we want to make and how many seeds are needed for this season.

Then, there are so many seed options! Which varieties of each crop do we want? Some varieties do better in the spring and fall. Some varieties prefer the heat of summer. Learning about the new varieties, deciding what will fit our farm.

New for this season? We are going to be planting heirloom tomatoes! We are planning on a variety of colors, but there is a purple one I am super excited about. Look for them to start late July.

He took a break from seeds today to order strawberries. They come as bare root plants that we will plant in the field spring 2026. We will start harvesting them in June 2027.

But don’t worry, we planted a whole bunch of strawberries spring 2025 that we will be picking in 2026. U-Pick strawberries anyone?

Don’t forget the farmers markets are open! Here are the hours for this week:

Kalamazoo Farmers Market: Saturday, 8am – 1pm. **Look for us in our normal spot, outside.

Muskegon Farmers Market: Saturday, 8am – 1pm.

Crisp Farm Store (5888 120th Ave, Holland) Monday – Friday, 8am – 6pm & Saturday, 8am – 5pm.

All right, that’s all for now. See you soon!

What It Is:

Through our subscription box (CSA), you receive a box of locally grown produce — weekly, every other week, or once a month — depending on what works for your household.
Each box is completely customizable: before delivery you’ll receive an email, listing what’s planned for the week, and you can swap out items you don’t want — for example, replacing a bag of carrots with extra apples. You can also add extra items from a selection of farm produce and goods from partnering local businesses.

Flexible & Convenient:

Going out of town? No problem — you can pause (put on hold) your share at any time without being charged.

Payment is handled automatically: your card is kept on file and charged each time you receive a box.

Pick up is available at Bronson! Pick up at the Terrace Café on Thursday’s, 2pm – 6pm.

Subscription Options:

Weekly Share — ideal for those who love fresh produce all the time.

Every-Other-Week Share — good for smaller households or occasional users.

Monthly Share — a lower commitment option, great for trying out the program.

Customization & What’s in the Box:

Each Wednesday night (the week before your scheduled delivery), you’ll receive an email with what’s planned for your box. From that email (or by logging into your account), you can make swaps or add-ons.

You have until Sunday at 10 am to customize.

The base share price is $22.00; if you swap in items above that value, the extra will be charged to your card.

Box contents vary by season and by what you select — there is never a “one-size-fits-all” box.

How to Sign Up:

Start by creating an account. HERE is the link.

Once you have the account created you can sign up for your share. HERE is a video showing you how to sign up.
